Spices exporters too [sic] explore new markets
A leading industry official said that the Indian spice exporters were exploring new destinations for exports due to stiff competition from several Asian countries.
India is losing its presence in the international market as far as exports of major spices such as black pepper, cardamom, ginger and cinnamon are concerned. The country is facing tough competition from countries like China, Brazil, Guatemala, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.
I don't know how seriously to take the threat of new competition. The availability of land and low cost labor does not always equal success. For example, India has a well-established reputation as a source of spices. If customers are given a choice of spices from India vs from Brazil, customers might shrug their shoulders and avoid the newcomer for the established supplier. But we'll see.
