So what do coriander and cilantro have in common you ask? Well lets make this simple. Cilantro and coriander are two different spices that come from the same plant. Cilantro is actually the chopped leaves of the coriander plant and the seeds of the coriander plant are crushed and used under the spice name coriander. So remember that the two spices while derived from the same herb are worlds apart in taste and aroma. Cilantro leaves are usually taken from the slow bolting plants before they mature. The other plants that are allowed to bolt longer have the seeds utilized as coriander. Bolting is a condition where plants seem to transform from the dense leafy looking plant to one that has grown into dense flowers and seeds.

Cilantro is widely used in Mexican and Asian recipes as a garnish. It is mostly added to the food at the end so as to not lose its flavor through cooking. Coriander seeds are also used a spice in many recipes around the world. Dried coriander and cilantro will last many times longer than the fresh picked herb which only last about five to seven days if refrigerated. The powdered version of coriander is used often for diet drinks believe it or not. Yes you can maybe help shed a few pounds with a fresh health smoothie with Coriander. Sounds funny though I will say! Try your next veggie or fruit smoothie with a little Coriander, Cinnamon, and Green Tea!

Coriander and cilantro is from the carrot and parsley plant family. It is actually called Chinese Parsley to many. The seeds and leaves can be eaten but they have different tastes. Coriander is quite nutritious, being rich in Vitamin C, calcium phosphorus and beta carotene. Research carried out in the United States suggests that coriander and cilantro may be beneficial for lowering blood-cholesterol. In lab experiments carried out with diabetic mice, coriander also showed the effect of lowering blood sugar level.
